Imagine listening to a podcast that no one else has ever heard before and never will, you will be the only one that will ever hear what you are hearing. This is a possibility now with the creation of SHELDON by the University of California, Santa Cruz Ph.D. student James Ryan. SHELDON is the name of the artificial intelligence that hosts and creates the podcasts that you hear. The name is derived from the name Sheldon Klein, an early pioneer of expressive artificial intelligence.Ryan's idea is that every person that tunes into the podcast will be listening to something unique. SHELDON works by generating counties which are called Sheldon Counties. The characters in these generated counties have their own lives with their own stories. They also interact with each other, which is what SHELDON turns into narratives which is what you hear if you tune into the podcast.Although SHELDON hasn't been released yet, Ryan has uploaded a couple of samples of what some of the podcasts sound li...

All your sci-fi dreams will come true…next century! There is no shortage of theories or perspectives on the ever-approaching post-singularity future. While we're slowly but surely adapting to the presence of robots and artificial intelligence in our everyday lives, the big questions of the world that the next generation will inherit – where self-aware robots may not only be a reality but a normality – have already begun to surface.Popular futurist commentator and professor of theoretical physics at the City College of New York, Michio Kaku, recently commented on the potential state of the human condition in a post-singularity world on the Curiosity Podcast and talked about the possibility of merging with robots to form evolved super-human fusions of man and machine over the course of the next century.  "Well, let's take a look at not this century, but the next century, the 22nd century. When we do have self-aware robots. Robots that can remove that chip i...

In addition to the name change, Google says new features are also coming soon.Just a few days after new branding for Android Wear was discovered with Play Services, Google's announced that it's officially axing the Android Wear name in favor of Wear OS.Officially called "Wear OS by Google", this replaces Android Wear both in name and logo. Gone is the Material Design-esque watch and in its place are two lines and circles in the iconic Google colors – very closely resembling the Assistant logo.Commenting on the new branding, Fossil's Chief Strategy and Digital Officer, Greg McKelvey, said:  Many of our smartwatch customers are iOS users, so we are confident in and eager to see the added benefits that both Android and iOS phone users globally will experience as Wear OS by Google rolls out in 2018.Google officially started supporting iOS back in 2015, and while improvements were made with Android Wear 2.0, the experience still isn't perfect. Along with the new Wear OS ...

Jailbroken iOS 11 users rejoice as there is a tweak allowing you to see what notifications you're getting without your phone turning on to reveal the lock screen that will be releasing soon.  The tweak is developed by Dynastic Development and is made to work perfectly with the iPhone X's OLED screen, but will work with any jailbreak iOS 11 device. Of course on all other phones, you won't get the battery benefits that the iPhone X would.  Introducing #ShortLook for iOS 11, by @DynasticDevelop: your notifications at a glance.https://t.co/Os6JS8HhkF— AppleBetas (@AppleBetasDev) March 14, 2018  Although the tweak has not been released yet the developer has stated that it'll be available to purchase soon.  It'll be available for purchase soon!— AppleBetas (@AppleBetasDev) March 14, 2018  The developer states on his website:     ShortLook shows only when you receive a notification while your device's display is turned    off, allowing you to quickly view incoming notifications ...

The FBI has arrested the CEO of a Phantom Secure, a company that provides security-oriented products. They sell encrypted Blackberry and Android devices with modified hardware to improve privacy (removing cameras, microphones, and GPS's are common changes). On top of the hardware products, they provide encrypted chat and email services to prioritize security and privacy at the highest level currently possible.  The CEO, Vincent Ramos, is being charged with "Racketeering Conspiracy to Conduct Enterprise Affairs (RICO Conspiracy); Title 21, U.S.C., Sec. 846 — Conspiracy to Distribute Narcotics; and Title 18, U.S.C., 2 — Aiding and Abetting." The legal document goes on to say that this began as early as 2008, to as recent as February 28th of this year.  Phantom Secure not only modifies device hardware to improve security, but also modifies the software side. They provide PGP encryption services for devices to achieve end-to-end encryption and route services to protect the us...

Zstandard, or zstd for short, is a new lossless data compression algorithm developed by Facebook. zstd is marketed as a "fast lossless compression algorithm, targeting real-time compression scenarios at zlib-level and better compression ratios."  While the algorithm is designed to be used for real-time compression, Ubuntu developers have been successfully trying to unpack Linux packages faster than with Xz and Gzip through zstd. Based on Canonical's tests using Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, the algorithm works perfectly with no need for additional use of memory or CPU power.  Through the tests made by the Ubuntu team, zstd seems to have speeds improving by 10% from the original Xz and Gzip tools used by the OS.     "Zstd is a compression algorithm developed by Facebook that offers far higher decompression speeds than xz or even gzip (at roughly constant speed and memory usage across all levels), while offering 19 compression levels ranging from roughly comparable to gzip in size (but much faster...

Android P continues to develop into a beautiful operating system, but receiving some controversial feedback for resembling aspects of other well known mobile OS's. The updated UI changes more closely resemble iOS according to some users, citing a few changes: many corners that were once squared off are being shaved down to create a rounded look. It also introduces a lot more 'white' in the background of interfaces, again soliciting criticism as it more closely resembles Apple's iOS.Typically these sorts of changes are no problem for Android users, as they have the freedom to customize the OS and its interface however they please. Google has decided to interrupt that parade, however, and is blocking custom overlays in Android P altogether. Substratum is not happy about this decision, with the Community Manager of the project posting a tweet about it:Substratum custom overlays can no longer be installed on @Android, starting #Android P.That means no more rootless #Substratum. No mo...

Largest acquisition in the tech industry? It was reported back in November that the Broadcom company was looking into buying its competitor Qualcomm in what would be one the largest takeover in the chip-making industry.Qualcomm's board of directors declined the offer and refused any subsequent counteroffer. However, Broadcom isn't giving up on the deal, as they have been attempting to replace a good bunch of Qualcomm's board of directors to allow for the purchase of the company, hostile takeover style. However, as it turns out, the acquisition of Qualcomm might end up in Intel buying both companies if Broadcom is successful with their hostile takeover. Intel has been aware of the threat it poses to them if a Broadcom/Qualcomm acquisition were to happen. Intel has already had troubles dealing with competitor Qualcomm in the past, they even had to kill their Atom line of smartphone processors and flushing away billions of dollars in manufacturing and marketing.Intel is also consi...

Have you always wanted to play Flashback's sequel with 3D hardware acceleration from your PSVita? Well, now you can.  Fade to Black is a 1995 action-adventure game developed Delphine Software International and published by Electronic Arts. The game is the sequel of Flashback, another game from 1992 that was listed in the Guinness World Records as the best-selling French game of all time. Paul Cuisset, the lead designer of Delphine Software International, is also known to have worked on Shaq Fu and the Moto Racer series.  Fade to Black was originally released for MS-DOS and the Playstation.  A few years ago, Grégory Montoir rewrote the DOS game's engine to make it run through OpenGL, the project was named f2bgl. The newly made engine allows for the game to be ported on multiple platforms accepting OpenGL, including the PSVita all thanks to vitaGL.  vitaGL is an OpenGL wrapper for the Vita created by none other than Rinnegatamante, whom we mentioned on the site before for his po...

« on: March 12, 2018, 05:34:12 AM »
You've been waiting for it, and now it's here. HENkaku homebrew enabler 3.65 for the PSVita is now available for installation! We recently published an article about veteran PSVita developer TheFl0w teasing a release for the 3.65 HENkaku Ensō Updater by adding support to the 3.65 firmware of the console for the new version of Download Enabler v4.As it turns out, TheFl0w has just released the 3.65 HENkaku Ensō Updater, which is very good news for anyone who's been waiting to play all the games that were released on 3.61-3.65 firmwares.Unfortunately, this update does not allow you to hack your console if your firmware is past 3.60, as you need to be on said firmware to use the homebrew enabler. You also will not be able to downgrade your console back to 3.60 once HENkaku 3.65 is installed, so don't make too much of a rushed decision before installing the software. It's also worth noting that some plugins created for earlier versions may not work and would need to be por...

Do you miss playing classic Game Boy video games, but hate emulating from your big screen computer? We've got the thing for you.Unlike the Smart Boy utility that popped up on the market in 2015, this Game Boy console case for iPhone by Wanle Cases is very different. It's not just a dock to plug your iPhone in, it's a full-on case with the original Game Boy retro look and feel. The case itself is quite interesting because it doesn't interfere with the iPhone's design and therefore is easy to put in your pocket. As you can see in the picture, the case respects the original Game Boy design but also gives access to the iPhone's original buttons, microphone, speaker, dock, flash and headphone jack. It also comes with 10 pre-loaded classic Game Boy's titles such as Tetris, Tank, Formula One Racing and Snake and Block. We don't know if the amount of games playable is limited, but 10 games sound already good enough. What's more, the case is entirely compatible with the iPhone 6, 6s, 6 Pl...

PSVita owning Quake II fans will rejoice. After the release of VitaQuake 2.9—a port of the original Quake which featured 3D hardware acceleration all thanks to vitaGL, the openGL wrapper for PSVita—Rinnegatamante is back again with 3D hardware acceleration for his port of Quake II's engine on the console.Quake II is a first-person shooter game that released in 1997 following Quake's release the year before. The game has had a huge success among players on its release. Although it was not a direct sequel to the original Quake, id Software decided that the game's gameplay was closer to Quake than that of a hypothetical new franchise, therefore giving it the name Quake II.The Quake II engine improved a lot from the first Quake engine, allowing for the game to render skyboxes and coloured lighting effects. The updated 1.5 version of VitaQuake II features a lot of improvements, such as:3D hardware acceleration thanks to vitaGL, allowing the game to render at the PSVita ...

The robot wasn't even going at full capacity, leaving the possibility for it to solve even fasterSoftware developer Jared Di Carlo and MIT Biometrics Lab Master's student Ben Katz have created a robot which is capable of solving the Rubik's Cube in less than half a second. The robot has shown it's superiority over humans by solving a 3x3 square Rubik's Cube in just .38 seconds. You can watch a video of the robot solving the Cube below.Humans have progressed slowly on the time that it takes to solve a Rubik's Cube with the most recent record holder, SeungBeom Cho solving the Cube in 4.59 seconds, which feels like an eternity by comparison. You can watch the video below.Di Carlo and Katz's robot was not the first to solve a Rubik's Cube. There was another robot made by Infineon Technologies called Sub1 Reloaded which was able to solve it in .63 seconds. The video of that robot is below. The robot created by Di Carlo and Katz uses six ServoDisc U-9 series motors, six motor ...

The Israeli government has been trying to purchase zero-days from European and US cybersecurity firmsZero-day exploits are hacking tools which exploit a previously unknown security vulnerability. These tools are often found to be used by law enforcement and government agencies in order to access devices used by criminals.Israel seems to have a need for one as they have been sending emails and letters to several security firms in the US and Europe. Back in 2015, Israel contacted many US security firms by sending out a letter trying to pay for zero-day exploits, Motherboard published the letter sent to these firms here.Recently it seems Israel reached out to security firms in Europe as well. A European source shared the email sent by the Israeli embassy in Berlin. This email was sent out in August of 2017, about two years after the letters sent out to the US security firms, and sounded the same asking for zero-day exploits. It seems the Israeli government didn't constrain their ...

Apple inc. products news / Is using the dark web legal?
« on: March 10, 2018, 09:35:32 PM »
Is getting into a network that houses drug lords and pedophiles legal? Maybe.A web of secrets and lies. That's likely the world you're signing up for when you take the relatively simple steps to entering the murky encrypted underbelly of the internet. While most users are blissfully unaware  of the existence of the dark web, use of the Tor anonymity network that allows access to the dark web has grown dramatically over the last few years. What was first born as a safe haven for activists to share content without the fear of prying eyes has transformed into a cyber-underworld that houses drug markets, child sexual abuse networks, illegal pornography and professional hit men – alongside vast communities of libertarian warriors who seek internet freedom and anonymity at any cost. But is using the dark web legal?First, let's define the dark web. The internet can be divided into 3 sections:The surface web , where you find all the websites you're familiar with like Google,...
