Grayshift is a cyber security firm that creates advanced technological solutions for local, state, and federal governments. This firm has created a solution which allows for a government body to plug in any iPhone and it will unlock the phone. The part of this technology that makes it very appealing for governments is the price model. Grayshift has created two different pricing models for agencies. One way is to buy the tool at full price for an unlimited amount of unlocks which would set an agency back $30,000. The other more economical solution for agencies is the same tool connected to the internet with a limitation of 300 devices costs $15,000 which comes down to $50 per device.According to the US government's public federal procurement data system, the State Department had a purchase order from Grayshift for a little over $15,000 indicating that they purchased the online 300 device unlocking tool. The listing is vague with the category listed as "computer and computer periphe...

Google has released Android P's developer preview, allowing users and developers to get a first glimpse of what Android P will bring. The firm will be bringing some sanity to the notch insanity by adding support for notches into the Android SDK, allowing the operating system to account for the presence of screen cutouts. The firm will also add new security tools, blocking apps which make use of the camera or microphone from working unless they are in active use or authorised by the user deliberately.Google has also added a new interface design change to Android, which appears to be a preview of what it plans to offer with Material Design 2, spotted earlier this year. While the security and other low-level changes to Android P are hard to replicate, some users want access to the minor UI changes of P, albeit without the bugginess of an early developer preview. An XDA Developers member has created a Xposed module which allows users to gain access to the fun bits of Android Oreo b...

Google announced Android P's developer preview a few weeks ago with the Pixel/XL and Pixel 2/2XL getting first dibs on the update via developer preview. Android P will bring support for notches on phones, as well as introduce additional security features and a new design language.Google will not be supporting the Huawei Nexus 6P, the LG Nexus 5X, or the Pixel C with Android P, leaving them on Oreo. While users were curious as to the fate of the Nexus Player, the firm did not reveal the fate of its device, until this week.In a comment to Android Police, Google has now confirmed that the Nexus Player would no longer be supported going forward. The device will also be getting no more security updates, putting it out of support officially once and for all.Google's Nexus Player device debuted in 2014 with Android Lollipop. It was the first device which supported the firm's Android TV platform and made use of the Google Cast protocol which allowed users to cast media from their smart...

Google's Chrome OS is due for a big update, and with Android P rolling out later this year, it seems that the firm will likely be updating the underlying Android runtime for the OS from Nougat to P.While Google's Chromebooks run Chrome OS, a custom build of Linux which revolves around the Chromium browser, the firm has begun including an Android runtime into it, which allows users to run Android apps on their devices. Google has now started advertising modern devices like the Pixelbook as having the ability to run Android apps and replace your tablet. Now, while Chromebooks don't run on Android in the way phones and tablets do, Chrome OS devices do get advantages from having access to the latest APIs. The Nougat update brought support for free-form apps in Chrome OS, meaning that users would have the ability to run apps in free form windows and resize them arbitrarily. For Oreo, while Google never did release a built of Android Ore for the Chromebook, the firm would likely have ...

The release of the new Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ have been the talk of the town recently. Although the phones are just incremental updates, the recent news regarding the smartphones have been centered around the new variable aperture and the re-positioned fingerprint scanner. They are also the first Samsung devices to get the Android Oreo 8.0 update meaning they are now compatible with Project Treble. This means these devices will have an easier time compared to previous Samsung phones in getting AOSP Android Oreo running. Someone testing this out was able to get a Project Treble Generic System Image (GSI) running on an Exynos Galaxy S9, which will hopefully pave the way for future development on the new devices. Not too long after the launch of the S9/S9+ the kernel source code for the phones were released getting the developer community started on work for the device right away. Only a couple of weeks later Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP) released an official build f...

The Petro, short for petromoneda, is a new attempt from the Venezuelan government to boost the country's struggling economy using cryptocurrency, and U.S. President Donald Trump just signed an executive order to ban its use in the United States. The cryptocurrency was launched in February 2018 but was announced back in December. Its controversy sparks from the fact that Petro is backed by Venezuelan oil and mineral reserves and is intended as a supplement to Venezuela's money, the bolívar fuerte, in order to avoid U.S. sanctions while doing international financing. "All transactions related to, provision of financing for, and other dealings in, by a United States person or within the United States, any digital currency, digital coin, or digital token, that was issued by, for, or on behalf of the Government of Venezuela on or after January 9, 2018, are prohibited as of the effective date of this order."This executive order was put in place after Venezuelan President Nic...

The cryptocurrency might be on its way to become illegal in almost every country due to its tainted blockchain.A team of researchers from the RWTH Aachen University in Germany found what seems to be illegal content on the blockchain while sifting through it to examine how much arbitrary data it contains. In their analysis, the team of German researchers uncovered about 1,600 inserted files, over 99% of them which are texts and images of an outlawed nature, including links to child pornography, copyright and privacy violations, and more. "Since all blockchain data is downloaded and persistently stored by users, they are liable for any objectionable content added to the blockchain by others. Consequently, it would be illegal to participate in a blockchain-based [system] as soon as it contains illegal content."This basically means that anyone who has downloaded data from the blockchain unknowingly participated in the distribution of child pornography, which is obviously very il...

LineageOS, previously known as CyanogenMod, is a custom open-source operating system for phones and is based on the Android platform. The LineageOS team recently upgraded their OS to version 15.1, rolling out the update for a select few devices. The upgrade includes a QR reader within LineageOS' camera app, a rewritten home launcher and the ability to customize the different styles of your device.Along with this new update, the Lineage team has been working on a brand new SDK to encourage developers to tap into the platform. This new SDK includes a Styles API for app developers to add an optional automatic dark theme and more through the AppCompat-v7 library. This API also allows for individual apps to change the style of the entire system, which could be a useful feature for music apps and would permit them to change the colors of the system, based on the art of the album that's currently playing on your device. The SDK also has a new Profiles API, marketed as one of the most ...

[Image: Financial Times] China is moving control of censorship and review of its press, publications and film directly under the auspices of the Communist party's propaganda department. The transition, which is emerging in the wake of a major restructuring of the Chinese government under Xi Jinping, will ensure that all control over film, television, press and all literary publications will move from the regulatory SAFFPT to the Chinese Communist Party's propaganda division. The SAFFPT (State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television) of China that acted as a media regulatory body and has overseen Chinese entertainment for a generation, is being eliminated entirely in the place of direct state control. This move comes in the wake of a major restructuring of the Chinese government, with power being increasingly centralised and consolidated under Xi Jinping's rule. It was detailed in an official document produced by the National Development and Reform Commission...

With the recent hype regarding Fortnite on iOS people started asking: 'What about PUBG?'Believe it or not, Playerunknown's Battlegrounds is actually playable and available on iOS and Android thanks to the Chinese technology company, Tencent, but it'a not all roses and rainbows as the game is in beta for specific regions only. It first launched in China, the homeland of Tencent, in Chinese-only which was a bummer but after using Google's AR Translate tool, I managed to navigate around the game.I’ve found myself playing PUBG on mobile way more than on PC… pic.twitter.com/94X9aG1XK5— Dennis Bednarz (@DennisBednarz) March 10, 2018Thankfully, this translation and Chinese player's you can't understand is no more. PUBG Mobile was just released in the Canadian App Store and Play Store, meaning that you can install it right now and not only have the game in English but also play with English-speaking players.Depending on what device you're running, and iPhone or an A...

At the beginning of the month, the ownership of the popular app Tasker was transferred to João Dias, who is also the developer for the AutoApps suit of Tasker plugins.Tasker is an app that helps you automate certain things on your Android device. Although Tasker can seem intimidating at first because of its complex user interface, don't let this deter you from using the app as it is a great tool. The app can make your daily life with an Android phone much easier. Automating things such as enabling and disabling your Wi-Fi based on your location to help save battery, or even playing your favorite playlist immediately after you plug in your headphones are easy to do with the app.Dias the new developer has released a new beta, labeled Tasker Beta 5.1.3b, through the Google Play Beta Program. This makes it easy for users to hop onto the Play Store and sign up for the beta. New betas are also easier to install as you don't have to download a new APK every time, instead, it is d...

After Sony recently announcing that they will stop giving away free games for PS3 and PSVita on the PlayStation Plus starting next year, the underground PS3 community as well as regular gamers have given up all hope of anything good coming for the console.Of course, that was until the PS3Xploit team released a 3.0 for their set of tools—nicknamed "HAN"—a homebrew enabler, named that way in reference to etHANol and the acronym HEN which stands for Homebrew ENabler within the underground console hacking community. The tools support both official firmware versions 4.81 and 4.82 and are available for every model of PS3, including the previously thought unhackable Slim and Super Slim models of the console. But what are those tools, exactly?HAN includes six tools used to re-sign packages for the PS3 and run said packages on the console afterwards. Essentially, this will allow you to run unsigned PS3 backups as well as PSP, PS1 and PS2 games from within the embedded emulato...
