After hearing about the Cambridge Analytica scandal and other unethical global surveillance controversies, it has become harder and harder to trust companies with the way they collect your personal data. We've been let down by so many huge tech companies, and apparently now is the time for the gaming industry to deceive us as well.Guild Wars 2 is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game—or MMORPG—developed by ArenaNet and published by NCSOFT. It was originally released as a paid game on PC in 2012, but later became free-to-play so as to bring more players due to unsustainable competition.Gaile Gray, a spokesperson for ArenaNet, wrote in a forum announcement that the company has suspended 1,583 accounts in the last 6 months for cheating. They apparently found out that the accounts were running alongside known cheating softwares, such as CheatEngine, Nabster, GW2MHRexe, UNF and MMOMINION. Some of those accounts were suspended after detecting that they were direc...

A repeat horror for iPhone 7's last year has come back to haunt the iPhone 8: broken touch functionality after a software update. The issue only affects devices that had a screen repair performed by a 3rd party, rather than directly through Apple. Apple's recent iOS 11.3 update looks to be the culprit this time around, which renders iPhone 8 touchscreens useless if they were repaired "unofficially". However, an update was released just one week later to fix the touchscreen problems. It's not yet clear at this time if Apple is working on a fix for iPhone 8's that have been repaired by an external party. The dead touchscreen issue has affected thousands of customers, with the CEO of Injured Gadgets claiming "This has caused my company over 2,000 reshipments" in a statement to Motherboard. Some speculate that Apple is intentionally causing issues to discourage 3rd party repairs. The news isn't all bad for users who have run into this problem, according to Motherboard:  According to...

Modern smartphones have been moving toward gesture-based navigation systems ever since our phones began to ditch more and more of their bezels. Xiaomi and OnePlus adopted gesture-based systems, and now it seems like Google will be adopting the same style of navigation as well in Android P. Earlier this month, the firm accidentally hinted that it would be overhauling Android's navigation system to be more based on gestures rather than buttons when it released a screenshot of Android with a missing recent button. Now, a new reveal by 9 to 5 Google has given us a more in-depth look at the new user interface. The missing recent button was not a fluke, after all, Google will indeed be getting rid of the button which has been prominent in Android since its inception and replacing it with a swipe gesture on the new home button, which has been replaced with a pill icon. The multitasking carousel has also been replaced by a new vertical carousel which looks quite like what Apple offers at t...

Following the recent events regarding Facebook and the controversy around Cambridge Analytica, Facebook began rolling out a new notification for their users to protect their information. Supposedly, Facebook has 2.2 Billion active users, and that's why the roll out might be slow. If you haven't received the notification yet, you're not alone, but there is another option.  If you're like me and you haven't had the chance to get the notification on your news feed yet, there's an easier way to check if your information has been leaked to Cambridge Analytica. Facebook created a tool that will let you know if you or any of your Facebook friends have logged into the "This Is Your Digital Life" third-party app, which is the app that shared the personal data of some Facebook users with Cambridge Analytica.  Note that even if you haven't logged into the app yourself, as long as one of your Facebook friends has, your information may have been compromised. That's around 87 million users who may...

The rise of Battle Royale games has been steadily increasing in the past few months, and we can probably thank PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds for that. Everybody seems to love PUBG, as it has already sold 33 Million units on PC alone in less than a year.  Some people seem to love the game so much that they create very bizarre programs, like this PUBG Ransomware that will encrypt all of your desktop files—including subdirectories—until you start playing the game "for at least an hour." This is by far one of the weirdest pieces of software we've ever written about.  The malware was first spotted by MalwareHunterTeam, explaining that the software encrypts and decrypts files using a .PUBG file extension.  Another top quality ransomware that asks you to play a game to decrypt files: "PUBG Ransomware".Sample: https://t.co/qyEHMG2orLExtension: .PUBGThis sample only encrypts files on desktop (including subdirectories)...@BleepinComputer @demonslay335 pic.twitter.com/5406DPbwmX&mda...

Smartphones have been one of the biggest technological advancement in recent years, and we're all excited when a new version of Android or iOS comes out, or when Samsung, Apple or OnePlus release a new phone with exciting new features... But do we really know what defines a "smart" phone?  Well, it seems that it doesn't have much to do with its ability to connect to the Internet.  The Galaxy J2 Pro is a new smartphone launched by Samsung that offers everything a phone has to offer, but with no Internet connectivity. The phone is meant to serve for students and older people who have no need for all the fanciness of a OnePlus 5T or an iPhone X. The lack of connectivity is therefore a marketing point for this product, because it's very hard nowadays to find a cheap phone that only has the basic abilities of a phone—to call and to text—that wasn't built during the early 2000s.  This is definitely a great alternative for parents who want their kids to be able to contact them, ...

We all know that the Android navigation bar looks like, it has been the same since Android began, whether it be hardware buttons or software buttons, there was always a home button in the middle, a back button on one side and either a recent apps or options button on the other side. This navigation bar is one of the core fundamentals of Android and something that all users are familiar with.  This might be changing soon though, a screenshot that showed up on a Google blog post seemed to be from a newer version of the Android P beta and it had a different navigation bar. You can see the 'new' navigation bar below and compare it to the current navigation bar right below it.  Possible Android P DP2 Navigation Bar:   Android P DP1 Navigation Bar:   It seems as if the home button has been replaced with a pill-shaped button similar to what is found on the iPhone X. It isn't clear whether the new home button will still be a button or a swipe gesture like on the iPhone X. The recent apps but...

A Surface Pro rival  HP and Google have launched the first Chrome OS-powered detachable, the HP Chromebook x2.  The Chromebook x2 is a premium detachable meant to rival devices like the Surface Pro and iPad Pro in terms of mixing productivity and consumption. It comes with a Core m3 processor from Intel, 4GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage, a 2400 x 1600 screen, a pair of and 13 MP cameras, two USB C ports, and 10.5 hours of battery life.  In terms of design, it is a sleekly designed machine with a 'ceramic white anodized aluminium finish' and a detachable full-sized keyboard with a 'leather like surface'. HP is aiming this device at the same class of users who would buy say a Surface Pro and use it for some tablet things, and some laptop things. As a tablet, it comes equipped with the Google Play Store. As a laptop, the full power of Chrome, web-apps and the opportunity to run Linux on this hardware remain ever-present.  While the hardware of this device is most undoubtedly nice, the real ...

Chrome OS is getting optimized for new styles of computing. When you think of tablet operating systems, you may think iOS, Android and perhaps Windows at a stretch, but Google is planning to change that perception by adding another of its operating systems into the running. When Google introduced Android apps to Chrome OS last year, one might have thought it was doing so to make up for the lack of native apps offered for the platform. Instead, the firm appears to have a much more ambitious plan in mind.Google is moving Chrome OS from a simple OS that supports desktops and laptops, to one like Windows which powers tablets and hybrids of all flavours as well.First, the firm is changing the way the app launcher appears in Chrome OS when a tablet or detachable in tablet mode is in use.According to a commit discovered by XDA Developers Chrome OS will now open a full-screen launcher for tablets when in tablet mode, as opposed to applying the default desktop behaviour of opening a par...

mGBA is an open source Game Boy emulator that is available on multiple platforms. The feature list boasts "faster" speed than most other emulators, and claims to run very well on "low end hardware, such as netbooks". It is compatible with Windows, macOS, Linux, and also via Homebrew on Nintendo 3DS, Wii, and the PSVita. Of the dozens of features it supports, it's well known for easily remappable controls, saves, screenshot & video recording support, as well as cheat codes.  We haven't seen much activity on the project since last year, with the 0.6.0 version releasing in the summer and 0.6.1 following shortly after. That has changed, however, with the latest 0.6.2 update released and now available — it resolves many bugs across all supported platforms. It eliminates over a dozen GBA bugs, and several crucial issues for the Nintendo 3DS, Wii, and PSP2 platforms.  Here's a list of some of the more notable fixes in the official changelog from the mgba website:     Core: Fix ROM...

Many people have despised the notch since it was introduced on the Essential PH-1 and iPhone X. Now many manufacturers are following the trend set by these two major manufacturers and incorporating the design into their new phones. The latest company to adopt the notch into their smartphone is OnePlus. Every manufacturer has their own reason for adopting the notch and also adopts in a different way.Instead of waiting for backlash towards the notch to come up, co-found Carl Pei attempted to explain the reasoning for the notch. Basically, he argued the notch allowed for the notification bar to moved up to the same level as the notch allowing for more real estate when displaying other things on the screen. Many users weren't convinced by this reason though, they argued that when watching a video the notch still came in the way or when the phone is being used in landscape mode generally. In order to compromise with the argument, Pete Lau says the OnePlus 6 will include a feature simil...

The old king is dead, long live the king.  The immortal phone might have a successor.  The HTC HD2 has a long history amongst the Android enthusiast community. It's the software equivalent of the Nokia 3310 - it just won't seem to die. Born running the ancient Windows Mobile 6.5 (yes, Windows Mobile), it went on to run basically any operating system thrown at it, from the latest versions of Android to Windows RT and even Ubuntu. While flagships come and go, no phone has been able to challenge this classic's ridiculous longevity and tinkering potential.  That is, until now.  XDA recently picked up findings indicating that there might finally be a device (or in this case, devices) ready to pick up the mantle of the legendary HD2. They found that despite years of Android updates and UX revisions and explosive phones, there are 2 devices that it seems Samsung and its competitors have been unable to kill - the Samsung Galaxy SIII and the Galaxy Note 2.  Take for instance the popular custo...

Pure Android straight from Google is what is called "stock" Android. But is it really the correct term for it?Samsung has been criticized for years for its bloated version of Android once dubbed "TouchWiz". While There has been a name change to "Samsung Experience" it's still the same software underneath. It has reduced it's bloat and crapware lately, however, the bad reputation and criticism still stand. So why would I go as far as compliment it with calling it the "true stock Android"?It's not a compliment but a conclusion. What is Android?Let's go back for a minute and take a look at what Android actually is. Stock Android, per definition, is the pure vanilla variant of Android, officially called the Android Open Source Program (AOSP). This is the version of Android that ships with many different handsets, and more famously Nexus and Pixel devices. The issue is that we are starting to see two different stock Android experiences, one of them being the Pixel software from Goo...
