If you're running Android 8.0 or 8.1, You can now use the Xposed framework to modify your Android phone. As all rooted users Android users know, the popular Xposed framework is one of the tools users who have rooted their devices can use to differentiate their Android experiences from that provided by Google and other OEMs.The developer of Xposed(rovo89), has now pushed out an update to the framework, supporting devices running Android Oreo.It has been noted that the previous update from Marshmallow to Nougat took over a year, owing mostly to the changes in app runtime made by the then new Android version. While the changes were welcome, the update to Nougat came at a time when Android Oreo was on the cusp of release.Rovo89 has been much faster, developing this new release just a few months after Android Oreo became publicly available. The new framework now supports phones which run Oreo, including the Google Pixel, Pixel XL and sequels, the Huawei Mate 10 series of phones and...

Have you considered getting into cryptocurrencies? Well, you could, all you would need is your body heat thanks to some work done by this organizationBitcoin isn't exactly great for the environment. The network which it runs on requires a lot of energy for transactions. For example, one Bitcoin transaction takes as much energy as 10 households use in one week, and the entire network uses more energy than Bulgaria. Other large altcoins aren't much better, Ethereum, the second largest cryptocurrency uses as much power as some Mediterranean countries. Some enthusiasts have come up with more environmentally friendly solutions for mining cryptocurrencies, including wind-powered mining rigs or even using a Tesla cars. But no one has done what a Dutch Organization, the Institute of Human Obsolescence (IoHO), has done. IoHO has gone to the extreme, by creating a way to harvest the heat released by the human body and using that to mine cryptocurrencies. Sounds crazy, but can our bodies rea...

For the longest time, the X Window System has been the "glue" between your applications, and the operating system itself. First originating in 1984, it ended up being the default windowing system for most UNIX-like operating systems, including Linux. One of the standout features that it had was network transparency, meaning that applications which are actually running on some big mainframe could display their user interfaces on a thin client, and be used seamlessly.X11 is old. As the name suggests, it's the 11th version of the protocol, and for a variety of reasons, including clashes between big operating system companies from the days gone, and the emerging open source community, X ended up staying on version 11 since 1987, instead implementing new features through extensions. Feature creep took hold, and X servers grew to include all sorts of features, including handing power management, and, for some reason, a print server. At this time, one implementation called XFree86 was...

Razer will be shutting down support for the Nexbit Robin's smart storage feature later this year. The smart feature was a selling point of the phone and provided seamless integration between local storage and the cloud. This feature allowed users to have their apps, photos and content synced to the cloud and stored there in cases of low local storage. The feature was critically acclaimed, and even Apple has now implemented a similar feature on its own iOS devices. In an email to fans, the firm said thanked users for trying out the Robin but confirmed that it would be shutting down Smart Storage services on March 8, 2018. Users were, of course, urged to download their data from the smart storage service before it shut down. While content like apps would be rendered inaccessible immediately after the shutdown of the service on March 1st, Nextbit is offering users up to April 1st to download their images from Nextbit Cloud. As NexbitOS is based on Android anyway, users can easily do...

A new car audio system from Sony announced at CES which is "astonishingly flat"Sony announced a new in-car head unit at CES that comes with Android Auto integration. The head unit has a beautiful name, it is called the XAV-AX5000, a name worthy of my first born. It has a great look coming in with a flush 6.95" touch display, and the best part is that it is bezel-less.Now, Sony has gone so far as to describe the XAV-AX5000 as "astonishingly flat", which from the images of this thing really seems to be the case. The touchscreen now uses capacitive technology instead of resistive technology which the previous models used. The XAV-AX5000 can be connected to a car's rear camera, it features aluminum buttons under the screen for basic operations, such as adjusting the volume. Sony states the unit boots up "soon after ignition is turned on", one would hope this holds true, otherwise, it would be a completely useless head unit. The receiver has a 4-channel system, which results in grea...

While Microsoft has been making a lot of progress in supporting open source software, and released things such as SQL Server on Linux, their support for consumer software is still lacking. But while applications like Office are still not available for desktop users (well, unless you use virtual machines or Wine), you can get OneDrive file syncing today using an open source application created by GitHub user skilion. While this application is still early in development, it already has a good set of features, some of which are not available for the official OneDrive client on Windows or Linux:File change monitoringResumable file transfersSupport for multiple accountsSelective sync InstallationCurrently, this client is not packaged for most major distributions, therefore, you will have to compile and install it manually. The application has 3 dependencies (along with typical tools such as curl, gcc, git, and make). These are libcurl, sqlite, and the DMD Compiler. To install ...

A thing we once believed would never happen has actually happened. Apple sings old iOS versions, which are jailbreakable, once again.Update: Apple no longer sings older iOS versions and everything is back to normal. Do not downgrade. If you lost your jailbreak or if you are eagerly waiting for a jailbreak, you most probably do not have to wait any longer. It seems like Apple has made a mistake and is suddenly signing a bunch of old iOS versions, all the way from iOS 7 to the newer iOS 10, for a bunch of different devices that support this firmware. If you want to downgrade, now is the chance as this may be a miracle which happens once upon a lifetime. Nothing like this has ever occurred before and the even has the jailbreak community in shock. Social media is exploding as Discord and Reddit try to grasp their userbases together and figure out what happened.I’ve taken a break from jailbreaking for less than a day and the whole world suddenly turns upside down as Apple sing...

OnePlus 5 owners that have been waiting for Android Oreo 8.1 now have an unofficial option allowing them to updateLineageOS is a custom OS which you can flash onto your supported Android devices using a custom recovery or using ADB sideload. It is the successor to CyanogenMOD, which many people know about since it was around for so long. Custom OS's such as CyanogenMOD and LineageOS are created for the sole purpose of having a stock Android feel, but with added features on top of the OS which are not included with the vanilla version of Android that Google ships on their Nexus and Pixel devices.LineageOS and many other custom OS's can be used to jump to versions of Android which haven't been released for the phone that you are on yet. This is the case for OnePlus 5 users as an alpha release of LineageOS 15.1 allows users of the device to flash the custom OS and have the benefits of Android Oreo 8.1. A downside to this method is that because these aren't official releases from the...

Razer is trying its hand at the holy grail of mobile computing: your phone is also your laptop.[custom:ces2018]It's been the dream of smartphones for well over a decade, and basically every attempt so far has been a failure. Razer is now giving it a shot and, to be honest, Project Linda is the best version of "your phone is also your laptop" that we've ever seen. It might even be good enough to actually work.Let's just say up front that this is a prototype. Razer likes to do this thing where it rolls out a concept product (like a laptop with three 17-inch 4K displays) to gauge interest and get feedback. Since this isn't a final or complete product we're not going to talk too much about specs or price or availability. What Razer Project Linda is, however, is the fullest and best realization of a dream of mobile computing.Project Linda is a shell for the Razer Phone, turning the high-powered device into an Android laptop. But unlike past attempts at this concept, which have...

Available soon between $275 and $295 depending on the style you choose. For a while now, it seems like companies that have the biggest interest in Android Wear are that of fashion brands. Kate Spade recently announced its first Android Wear-powered gadget, and now Skagen is joining the party with its Falster Smartwatch.Skagen's released hybrid smartwatches in the past, but this is the first one from the company with a touchscreen. Similar to most all of Skagen's other products, the goal is to make the Falster Smartwatch as minimalistic as possible. The body is sleek, there's no flat-tire on the screen, and there's just one physical button on the right side.Exact specifications have yet to be announced, but we do know that the Falster Smartwatch will ship with Android Wear 2.0, has support for the Google Play Store, and offers "activity tracking." The watch will be compatible with Android devices running 4.4 or later, and if you have an iPhone on iOS 9.0 or newer, you're also in ...

The latest Mods for the Moto Z line bring a slide-out keyboard and blood pressure monitoring to the party.Motorola's not backing away from the Moto Mod ecosystem, adding a mini slide-out keyboard and a health monitor to the line-up of capability enhancing add-ons for the Moto Z. We got to try out the two newest: the Lenovo Vital Moto Mod and the Livermorium Slider Keyboard Moto Mod.Lenovo Vital Moto ModMore and more we're seeing health tools integrated into the gadgets we carry, from heart rate sensors to blood oxygen sensors. They're usually pretty good, but they're not quite clinical level. But there's stuff they can't do, and that's where the Lenovo Vital Moto Mod comes in.It's a very bulky number, but it has to be to include the mechanics necessary to measure blood pressure. It is, in essence, a miniature blood pressure cuff, but instead of being for your arm it is for a single finger. You slip your finger through the ring on the back (a finger on your left hand is recommen...

This is the way of the future.Phones are getting thinner and display bezels are getting smaller, so any time a company can save space in a phone it's going to do it. The latest way to save space and give companies flexibility has been created by Synaptics, with its new in-display fingerprint solution. The first company to use the new fingerprint sensor tech is Vivo, and I had an opportunity to use this awesome new sensor in one of its phones at CES 2018.The in-display fingerprint sensor, as a standalone component, doesn't look much different than any other capacitive style sensor. All it needs is a small contact point with the main board of the phone, and then companies are free to place the sensor anywhere they want. In Vivo's case, it's dead center near the bottom of the display, which is the easiest place to reach with either thumb when holding the phone. This is the future of fingerprint sensors in smartphones. This is an optical sensor rather than the capacitive t...

WPA2 has been around since 2004, and with issues like KRACK, Wi-Fi security might be overdue for this upgrade.Earlier at CES 2018, the Wi-Fi Alliance announced that it is working on the WPA3 (Wi-Fi Protected Access 3) draft standard. The announcement does not go too much into detail about what exact changes this new version will bring, nor is the specification available yet, but four key areas of improvement are mentioned in the press release:Stronger protection even for networks with weak passwords. Presumably, this refers to stronger defences against things like brute-force attacks.Simplified setup process for IoT devices, which could make it easier to connect to secure wireless networks for Internet of Things devices.Stronger encryption. According to the announcement, WPA3 will include a 192-bit security suite, useful for networks with higher security demands, such as governments.Individualized data encryption on open networks. With WPA3, security even on open networks will...

Magisk updated to 15.1, fixes bootloop on some devices.Magisk is a fantastic tool managing your rooted Android device. One of the primary benefits of using Magisk is the ability to hide the "rooted" status from the device itself, that way apps are unable to block the user because of the root status. This makes having a rooted device far easier and more convenient, both short and long term. This specifically allows you to circumvent the need to root your device multiple times if a particular app is blocking it's use. Up until recently, Magisk has been in beta releases — but we are now seeing the official release and some bug fixes in the 15.1 version. The bootloop issues were resolved with the 15.1 update, as the developer mentions: There were some faulty code in magiskboot, which in some cases will cause fstab to be corrupted, leading to bootloops. The issue is now identified, reproduced, fixed, and tested.topjohnwu then goes on to say: In addition, with reports a...
