Some Lenovo device fingerprint scanners can be bypassed.Lenovo has issued a security update informing users that they may have a serious vulnerability. It was given a severity level of "high". The issue is specific to Lenovo and can affect Thinkpad, ThinkStation, and ThinkCentre products. Lenovo has updated the initial security statement by clarifying that this does not affect Windows 10 devices. This is because Windows 10 devices use Microsofts official built-in fingerprint scanner support. The issue impacts Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 machines that utilize the Lenovo Fingerprint Manager.Lenovo describes the vulnerability in a detailed summary:  A vulnerability has been identified in Lenovo Fingerprint Manager Pro. Sensitive data stored by Lenovo Fingerprint Manager Pro, including users' Windows logon credentials and fingerprint data, is encrypted using a weak algorithm, contains a hard-coded password, and is accessible to all users with local non-administrative access to the syste...

Moto X4 users may be happy to hear that Motorola has decided to make the kernel source code available for the X4Motorola has recently become better about releasing kernel source codes for their phones. They have gotten to a point where they could be an example to other Android OEMs who do not comply with the GPLv2's requirement of releasing kernel source codes in a timely manner. Motorola has made the kernel source code for the Moto X4 from the Android Oreo update available. The Moto X4 has a lot of things going for it, for one the specifications are good and up to date. The phone sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 SoC, 3/4GB of RAM with 32/64GB of storage, a 5.2 inch HD (1920x1080) IPS display, dual 12MP + 8MP cameras and a 3,000 mAh battery. The phone originally shipped with Android 7.1 Nougat back in August. Originally Motorola took a while releasing the kernel source codes, finally releasing it in October, so it is good to see Motorola keeping to a timely manner when releasing k...

Best CPU option for a low budget Socket 775 Gaming PC?Of all the PCs I have built, my personal favourite is what I call the TrashTop v2. This computer came to be from the actions of a very dedicated fan who I meet every year during Gamescom, Europe's biggest game conference. This fan has a hobby of rescuing PC components from scrapyards in Germany and he shares some his spoils with me every time we encounter. At some point, I started going over the small pile of components that resulted from this friendship and wondered what would be the best PC I could build. The result was the following:  Motherboard: GA-p35-ds4    CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200    RAM: 8 GB of DDR2    GPU: GTX 570Which has a referential price of about €160 and is able to play a large number of modern games with acceptable performance. And while the results are impressive given the price, the decade-old CPU was the main limiting point of this setup. I started looking at upgrades while maintain...

Modifying an iPhone. I know it's a crazy thought but it has been done and there are some great benefitsFrederico Cerva, a talented technician, and a YouTuber posted a video recently of him replacing the memory on the logic board of an iPhone 7 with a 512GB memory chip. It is a fairly impressive modification to an iPhone and one that works well. This is not a simple modification and should be left to professionals. Anyone thinking about modifying or getting their phone modified should know that doing so will void their warranty.Cerva begins the video by taking the modified iPhone into an Apple Store and asking the employee if they sold any iPhone 7's in a 512GB variant. Once the employee responded with no, Cerva continued by showing the employee the first 512GB iPhone 7.Cerva then thanks, Union Repair and Qianli for providing him with the 512GB memory chip. He also thanks a Fernando in Mexico who helped him with programming the memory chip to be used in an iPhone. The video th...

Custom ROM enthusiasts have a reason to be excited with these new official build releasesRooted users of Xiaomi Redmi 3S/3X and Sony Xperia Z5 will be glad to hear that they finally have access to official builds of LineageOS 14.1. Usually, there are early ports of LineageOS ROMS thanks to members of the community, but they don't have the reliability and stability that you get from official builds released from LineageOS themselves. The official builds released by LineageOS are almost bug-free on the Sony Xperia Z5, and mostly working on the Xiaomi Redmi 3S and 3X.For the Xiaomi Redmi 3S and 3X, the things that are functioning properly are listed below:AudioBluetoothCameraEGLFPCRILVideo PlaybackVoLTEWiFiLED notification indicatorIf LineageOS, or just custom ROMs, in general, are not your thing, Xiaomi Redmi 3S and 3X users will be glad to know both of those phones are on the list of devices that will receive Xiaomi's MIUI 9 update in the upcoming months. To get Line...

Apple's MacOS and iOS are two different OSes, but this Apple OS concept imagines a world where they are the same.UX designer Aurélien Salomon created an impressive Apple OS concept that merges iOS and macOS to create an Apple OS that works on both. This concept draws heavily from Apple's current iOS design language, with whitespace and large fonts aplenty. The design incorporates prominent power user wants like a dark mode while keeping translucency which is currently in vogue across desktop operating systems. The concept also includes redesigned Finder and Apple Music apps for the desktop. The former being more dynamic and mobile-inspired than what Apple currently ships. The latter appears inspired by the current iOS Apple Music app with influences from Microsoft's fluent design powered Groove Music app showing through. Apple has long since been urged to break up iTunes into several lightweight apps, and this shows just what those might look like in practice. While thi...

watchOS has been a grey area for jailbreakers as while tweaks adding functionality have been released, no full jailbreak has been seen. Until now.  iOS has seen a lot of development in terms of hacking and infiltrating the system, although the activity is sinking, it hasn't stopped as the developer going under the name Sparky, who is responsible for the Meridan jailbreak for iOS 10, has released an early prototype of the OverCl0ck jailbreak, which is the first ever public jailbreak tool for the Apple Watch.  I just posted an early prototype of OverCl0ck to GitHub. I've also modified @tihmstar's offsetfinder to work with saved watchOS kernels (still needs work).Don't expect to much of this too quickly.Contributions are very welcome. https://t.co/vY95k2O3hn— sparkey (@iBSparkes) January 26, 2018 Sparkey notes that this is a project in very early stages and only supports watchOS 3. It may even only support specific Apple Watch models and not work properly with different sub-versio...

FrancoKernel released for Android Oreo OxygenOS.  Developer francisfranco, the creator of "FrankoKernel", has been working to bring it to OnePlus phones. The developer created two versions: one (r17) is for Android 8.0.0 OxygenOS Open Beta 2, the other (r18) is for Android 8.1.0 Custom ROMs.  A Kernel is typically the centrepiece of an Operating System, handling both memory and CPU. The kernel is a vital piece of the OS and dictates all operations. The FrancoKernel allows users a deep level of customization, at the "root" of the OS. This means a user can control various tasks, including the tweaking of CPU cores frequencies and changing voltage.  Changelog  The official changelog directly from the developer:     r20 - January 25th, 2018   Fixed an issue which could cause problems with time Fixed an issue with max brightness on the 5T Merged some commits from the Pixel 2 Updated performance profiles r19 - January 24th, 2018  Merged 4.4.113 Merged the latest CAF tag Small WiFi driver u...

Nokia's Android Oreo Beta dramatically improves quality of low light photos.  The Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 phones don't have top-notch cameras, but they take crisp sharp pictures if there is sufficient lighting. Some users have noticed that these particular devices struggle in low-light situations, and Nokia has decided to tackle the issue with a software update to improve the quality. Nokia has released an Android Oreo beta update for both the Nokia 5 and the Nokia 6. The beta includes a revamped camera app, with massive improvements for low-light picture taking.  NokiaPowerUser has created some great image comparisons, both before and after using the camera in low-light. Take a look and notice the details:  Nokia 5 Image Sample       The first set of images were taken with the Nokia 5. Left image is before the update, right image after updating to the beta. You immediately notice that the right image has a lot more detail and less blur. Certainly makes late night pictures higher quality...

Nokia announced an Android Oreo 8.1 beta for the Nokia 8.  HMD has been very proactive about keeping their Nokia device updates on the move, and ensuring the Android experience is smooth. They began beta testing Android Oreo 8.0 in October of last year, following the official update not long after. Now after seeing Android Oreo 8.1 on Google's devices for a few months, HMD is pushing an 8.1 beta for the Nokia 8. Nokia's Chief Product Officer announced the 8.1 beta for the Nokia 8 via Twitter and said it would include a "host of new features":  Be our guest as we serve #AndroidOreo 8.1 beta for #Nokia8 . New 2.8 update for Android Wear includes sleek dark theme.  Android Wear is now, for the first time, seeing the much-needed dark/black theme for the OS. There's a real aesthetic appeal to dark modes which attracts a lot of users (myself included), but there's also a battery conservation bonus. Most of the Android Wear devices are using modern screen technologies, such as OLED.  One of the primary benefits of using OLED technology instead of the traditional LCD tech that we're used to is how it handles powering the pixels. OLED has the ability to power individual pixels, which means if 90% of the screen is black when you're viewing settings, for example, it only has to supply power to 10% of the pixels — thus substantially decreasing use of the battery, and extending its life to the user. Overall OLED screens carry that efficiency to  A small sample study was run by greenbot to see just how much real-world battery saving users receive when using an OLED screen coupled with a dar...

Nvidia wants its GPU's to reach gamers.  Cryptocurrency mining has been wreaking havoc on the gaming community in recent times, making it nearly impossible to find and purchase a high-end graphics card. Most cryptocurrencies right now are "mined" by utilizing specifically designed hardware, or Graphics Card Processors (GPU). Unfortunately, these same GPU's that gamers use are being purchased with the intent of mining, and it's had a massive effect on the availability of these parts. Prices have soared, and availability has been near zero in many locations (including online retailers, like Amazon).  Nvidia is aware of the shortage, and made a statement on the issue:     For Nvidia gamers come first. All of our activities around our GeForce-products are directed towards our main target group. To ensure GeForce-Gamers continuously have access to GeForce-graphic cards even in the current situation, we recommend our trading partners to take according measures to ensure they can provide th...

According to Essential, sideloading with the original cable can cause problems.  It certainly seems odd to have a problem like this, but Essential has acknowledged and confirmed the issue via Twitter. The included cable is a USB 2.0 cable, and apparently causes issues when flashing or sideloading the device. The USB 2.0 cable is apparently intended to charge the device, not for anything else. It is recommended that you use a USB 3.0 device for flashing and sideloading.  Here's the tweet directly from Essential:  Some users have reported issues when flashing or sideloading using a USB 2.0 cable. The cable included with PH-1 is USB 2.0 and is primarily intended for charging. If you're flashing or sideloading PH-1, we recommend using a high-quality, spec-compliant USB 3.0 (or higher) cable.— Essential (@essential) January 19, 2018  The tweet was just a confirmation to what they previously added to their beta build page. Essentials said it can result in an unusable device:     Don'...

Installing tweaks on iOS 11 with the Electra jailbreak can be a little bit troublesome. Thankfully, there is an easier way.  FilzaEscaped, the file manager of choice among iOS 11 jailbreakers contains a bug which doesn't allow you to extract archives on the device. This makes installing tweaks annoying as you need to SSH into your iDevice using a Mac or a PC. That's far from perfect.  Thankfully, there is now a way to install tweaks right from your device by using a combination of different tools by different developers. It sounds complicated, however, it is very simple and this video shows you exactly how to do it. Enjoy! ...
