The US Securities and Exchanges Commission Chairman (SEC) Jay Clayton is expected to testify that he supports cryptocurrency regulation to the Senate later today.  In prepared speeches uploaded to the US Senate website for the 'Virtual Currencies: The Oversight Role of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission' hearing, the chairman will express his support for the cryptocurrency.  He will note that  "regardless of the promise of this technology", users deserve the full protection of the federal securities laws.  The enthusiasm that drives the current Bitcoin market leaves vulnerable investors open to "Fraudsters and other bad actors."  He is also expected to testify to the following at the hearing:     It appears that many of the U.S.-based cryptocurrency trading platforms have elected to be regulated as money-transmission services. Traditionally, from an oversight perspective, these predominantly state-regulated payment services h...

As Google's Material design reaches 4 years old, hints emerge that the company is working on a revamp.  Earlier this weekend, Chromium commits (which have now been hidden) were spotted earlier making references to updates to the Chrome browser and Material Design 2.  While we don't know much about what this so-called "Material Design 2 " will involve, we do know that in the case of Chrome it'll at least bring minor changes to the colour palette.  The colour changes to the existing Chrome palette would make the regular browser tabs nearly white in comparison to its current interface, while incognito mode would appear a lot darker by default.    The Chromium commits also hints improved support for touchscreens. As we reported earlier, Google is working to bring Chrome OS to both tablets and detachables. Google's Chrome OS does not at this time support a tablet optimised view for its Chrome browser, and users would be required to download the separate but less full-featured Chrome Andro...

Is it a good idea to invest in this Chinese GPU?I recently got my hands in a bit of an oddity, the Yeston Radeon R7 350.This particular AMD GPU was released on 2015 exclusively for Asia-Pacific territories to capitalize on the popularity of a number of MOBAs in areas such as China. What caught my attention is that one of these can be imported to my side of the world (Europe) for about $100, or around €80, which is what I paid for my low-end Nvidia GT 1030.What I am going to be using is the R7 350 distributed by Yeston, a Chinese brands that sell all sorts of Graphics Cards in the Asian giant. The modern variant of the GPU comes with 4 Gb of VRAM. This is impressive considering that new GPUs on the same price range (such as the GT 1030) often have 2 GB of VRAM. Mid-range GPUs such as the GTX 1050 are also commonly sold with 2 GB.If you are considering importing this GPU (or similar) when exactly will the extra VRAM be useful? Let's take a look at some games.Grand ...

Rooted Android Oreo users will be happy to know that GravityBox has been updated to work on Android OreoXposed Framework took a long time to be updated to support Android Nougat, but after countless hours of work, XDA Senior Recognized Developer rovo89 was able to accomplish this in October. Thankfully this is not the case for Android Oreo as it took significantly less time to bring Xposed to Android Oreo. Popular modules are already beginning to receive updates from developers for Android Oreo, including GravityBox.GravityBox was updated to support Android Nougat, around the same time that Xposed Framework was updated, but it didn't get an update for Android Oreo. That has changed as GravityBox 8.0.0-beta1 has been released with support for Android Oreo. It has been developed and tested on the Nexus 5X running stock Android 8.0 and 8.1.For those that don't know what GravityBox is or what it does, it's an open-source module for the Xposed Framework. It's packed with many featur...

Apple inc. products news / Kernel Source Code for Mi A1 released by Xiaomi
« on: February 04, 2018, 10:26:21 AM »
Xiaomi Mi A1 users have a reason to get excited because Xiaomi has released the kernel source code for the Mi A1Early in January, there was a lot of online chatter about Xiaomi not releasing the Kernel Source code for their Mi A1. This has become a very popular phone lately because of all the features it has at such a low price. This makes the Xiaomi Mi A1 a great budget phone at the price of $220 but with great features. The phone also runs Android One which is like Android Oreo but for phones with lower specs. Xiaomi not releasing the source for the phone was becoming very unpopular with customers and developers alike.Thankfully the wait is over as Xiaomi has finally come around and released the source code for the Mi A1. Developers and enthusiasts can head over to the GitHub to check out the full source code. Keep in mind the source code that has been released is for the Android Nougat build and not the Oreo build.Having the kernel source code for a phone is very important i...

Sony's PSVita may have been abandoned, but enterprising developers are still working make games developed for the console playable on PCs.A developers known as Peter MacKay has started to develop the first PSVita emulator for PCs, dubbed Vita3K.Vita3K will when released purportedly allow users to play games developed for the PlayStation Vita on their PCs. There's a catch, of course, the emulator is not yet fully functional.  It's in a very early stage, and users can't play any commercial games, which would be --I imagine-- one of the main perks of using an emulator. Right now, you can only run basic homebrew applications like VitaQuake and VitaTester."Vita3K is an experimental PlayStation Vita emulator for Windows and macOS. The GitHub description reads, "The emulator currently runs a few homebrew programs in .vpk format. No commercial games are playable."Gaming emulation projects like Vita3K have been criticised in the past for helping in the growth of piracy. This 2017 ar...

As Deepfakes technology transitions from difficult to accessible, experts and pundits alike fret over the social implications. We earlier wrote about AI video manipulation and deepfakes last month, but the program has more far-reaching implications than just making smutty videos of your crush or favourite movie star. As the technology has become more accessible and user-friendly, pundits and experts have raised alarm about the potential socio-political side-effects.It used to be that while we accepted that photos could be altered, videos of public figures making proclamations one way or another could at least be counted on to reveal some aspect of audio or visual accuracy. With deepfakes, that certainty has evaporated. Other experts this week have raised the possibility of catastrophe being started by a faked video of a prominent politician, say. President Donald Trump, announcing a nuclear assault on North Korea. Such a video could, in an age where tensions and paranoia are run...

Google's ChromeOS has now gotten better for users of hybrid devices with Chrome OS 64.The firm is adding a commonly used screenshot button combination, the power and volume down combo, to Chrome OS. This is done so users od devices like the Pixebook which are capable of being folded into tablets can easily take screenshots without needing to engage to screenshot button. Not mentioned in the changelog is the new flag that allows users to turn on split screen for apps in tablet mode. It works very much like Windows 10, in that two apps can be viewed on screen at once.We reported earlier this week that Google might be planning to make Chrome OS power detachables in addition to hybrids, and improvements like this make that more likely. Google's improvements to tablet mode may also make the OS a viable standalone tablet operating system as well. In fact, a Chrome OS-powered tablet has been spotted in the wild this year, and speculation about Google adapting ChromeOS for tablets has be...

Excited for Google I/O? We weren't, but it seems Google is far ahead of the game.Amidst a series of riddles and a labyrinth of puzzles, Google has revealed more information regarding their annual developer conference Google I/O. While we are still at least 4 months away from Google's annual showcase of all the behind-the-scenes work they've been doing on the future of Google's software, hardware, and services, Google has been incessantly teasing the excited developer (and the newswriters, like me) with little snippets and teasers of information. The latest, and in fact, largest, of these, comes in the form of an overhaul of the Google I/O website, which has been transformed into a riddle-packed labyrinth. The setting of the website uses Street View and starts in a parking lot, proceeding onwards to a reception office full of little hints and 4 locks to get through to proceed forwards to find out even more information about the upcoming conference. There's a lot to discover if you ...

ChromeOS might soon run on detachable like the Surface if commits to chromium are any indication.  ChromeOS has long since been sold on notebooks, and later hybrid devices like the Pixelbook and Samsung Chromebook Pro and Plus, but detachable are a new form-factor for the operating system entirely. For the unfamiliar, detachable PCs are distinct from hybrid pcs in that they are built so that the base and the screen can be detached completely as opposed to simply folding out of the way.  XDA has found two commits referencing the "base detection" functionality of a Cannon Lake powered device known as meowth at the moment. The first commit "adds a common framework for detecting a detachable base", while the second is to "verify that we can detect a base attach and detach Not much is known about the PC codenamed meowth, other than the platform and it is likely a detachable.  ChromeOS isn't the only operating system which traffics in detachable PCs at the moment Microsoft does the same wi...

Apple inc. products news / How to install Discord on Linux
« on: February 01, 2018, 03:32:29 AM »
Wherever you're just trying to chat with friends or want to give the official ModMyDiscord a shot, it is always nice to be able to use the official app.  Discord's Linux client first came out back in 2017, but, they don't exactly provide a lot of instructions on how to install it. The client is only offered as an archive for manual installation, or as a .deb package that only works with Debian-based Linux distributions (such as Ubuntu and Linux Mint). However, there are various options available for installing it on your system.  Using the Discord snap  Snaps are a relatively new way of packaging Linux applications. Apps packaged in this manner are both easier to install and use, as they do not require dealing with dependencies, but are also more secure as they are containerized and sandboxed. In addition to that, applications are auto-updated on a daily basis.  Snaps are available on many Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch Linux, and Solus. Instructions for enabling...

« on: January 31, 2018, 09:08:13 PM »
