Inspired by Tesla's Powerwall, DIY enthusiasts created another method for alternative energy.Tesla PowerwallJust under three years ago, Elon Musk announced Tesla's Powerwall: a battery that can absorb energy from solar panels or the built-in grid, and is capable of storing 10 kWh of electricity (According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, that's about one-third of what the average American household consumes daily). The only real issue with the Tesla Powerwall is the price tag, which starts at about $3,000.Due to the price, some DIY enthusiasts decided to investigate other ways to accomplish the task at a reduced cost. They have been utilizing recycled batteries to create a "Powerwall" of their own, at a way cheaper expense. Some of these creative hobbyists have built even more capable solutions than Teslas. One member even claimed his creation can store as much as 28kWh, which is nearly three times the Tesla Powerwall. And for statistic's sake, that would amount t...

Final Fantasy... Potato? If you game on an entry level or low budget PC you are probably familiar with the anxiety of having to buy a game without knowing for sure if your PC will be able to run it in an acceptable manner on the lowest settings.Pre-release demos seem to be getting rarer with each passing year, but Final Fantasy XV has decided to make the difference by releasing a tool that allows you to benchmark the game on a number of graphical presets, providing a score that you can use to make an informed purchase. The benchmark can only initially run in one of the presets, but there is a way to expose individual settings and tweak the game under what is usually allowed, enabling much higher benchmark scores. This can serve as a glimpse at what the full game will allow and provide just some plain bizarre results. To achieve something like this you will need the ffxvBenchCustom tool by DrDaxxy. Installing it as simple as extracting its contest into the install folder o...

Apple inc. products news / Cake mobile browser uses 'swipeable' search
« on: February 12, 2018, 07:57:40 AM »
Cake Browser allows you to swipe through results quickly and smoothly.Cake Browser is a new mobile browser for iOS and Android devices that introduces an innovative method to browsing the web: swiping through results. You can manually enter URL's if needed, but the idea of the Cake browser is to use its search functionality (which you swipe through the results of). Once you download the app and launch, it will prompt you to choose either Google or Bing as a search engine (can be changed later in settings). Once you enter a search query, it will automatically pull the top result for you, and allow you to swipe between the top search results — they are preloaded which makes swiping through them a breeze. You also have the ability to narrow your search results down to specific categories, such as image content, videos, and more. In the app settings, you can also change the sources for different types of content (using Giphy for gifs, for example)The main features are advertis...

GreenG0blin jailbreak for Apple TV 4 running iOS 10.3.3 to be released soon  If you have an Apple TV 4 and really looking to jailbreak the device now, this is your time. Currently, tvOS 10.2.2 is still being signed by Apple, this allows for downgrades to be possible even without SHSH Blobs.  NitoTV, the developer behind GreenG0blin, is working on getting a tvOS 10.2.2 jailbreak for the Apple TV 4. There are some things to keep in mind before you start downgrading or go out and buy a new Apple TV 4 in order to take advantage of this jailbreak though:  It is important to make sure you know what Apple TV 4 you have/are getting. If it's a new Apple TV 4 that comes in a white box, downgrading that Apple TV is risky as the remote that comes in the box will not connect with your Apple TV after you downgrade, because they are programmed to work on tvOS 11 and above. A way around this is to use an older controller to pair and go through the activation screen.  If you do not have an Apple TV 4...

Is your OnePlus 5 feeling a little stale? Well, freshen it up with this new beta build!OnePlus' latest flagship smartphones have both received updates for their respective OxygenOS beta tester builds. The updates bring the OnePlus 5 to OxygenOS Open Beta 5 and the OnePlus 5T to OxygenOS Open Beta 3, and bring a series of incremental improvements and changes that will soon trickle downwards towards the main user update branch. The headline feature of this build is the addition of navigation bar based system navigation gesture controls, similar to those found on the iPhone X. These gstures can be activated in settings and used via swiping in various directions in a manner not unlike that found on the iPhone X. This feature seems to be working well on the beta build for these devices, as can be seen in the video below:Aside from this significant addition, OnePlus have focused largely on introducing bug fixes and improvements in this beta update, addressing some common complaints ...

Your PC might be making some criminal sweet, sweet cash, according to the findings of a cybersecurity firm. You might remember the chaos caused by the WannaCry cybersecurity crisis last year, where a security exploit developed by the National Security Agency in the US was used to create a devestating ransomware attack on an international scale that affected over 230,000 computers in over 150 countries. Well, out of the fire of that nightmare has come a new exploit called WannaMine, with a completely different goal in mind; to covertly use infected computers and networks to mine cryptocurrency.Cybersecurity firm Panda Security from Spain discovered WannaMine in October, and according to cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, it has grown significantly since; potentially infecting tens of thousands of computers. Furthermore, it poses additional risks due to how it gains access to victim compuerts; it uses a two pronged approach, stealing stolen logins to try and break in to a victim's comp...

You might soon be able to use your Bamboo Slate on Linux. It's no secret that the range of hardware support on Linux, especially in niches such as digital art, is limited to say the least. However, the solution for the most determined and perseverant Linux users who pride themselves on their love for the creative professions has been open source development projects that enable support for specialist hardware like drawing tablets and smart tablets. So is the case here also; an open souce project called Tuhi, brought to you by two Red Hat developers, seeks to bring support for Wacom SmartPads to Linux.Their open source tool allows users to connect to and download drawings from Wacom SmartPad devices like the Bamboo Slate and Bamboo Spark, thanks to some reverse engineering of existing tools such as the Wacom Inkspace ultilty.Their 'Tuhi' project aims to work with the following Wacom SmartPad devices on Linux:Wacom Bamboo Spark  Wacom Bamboo Slate  Wacom Bamboo Folio  Wacom ...

After the recent "Downgrade Party" where Apple started signing a bunch of iOS versions, we thought it couldn't get better. We were wrong. If you're unfamiliar with iBoot and SecureROM, let me explain it briefly: Those components are responsible for booting the device and ensuring security, just as their names imply. You can roughly call it a bootloader and a "Secure Boot" for iOS. iBoot ensures iOS is booted and SecureROM ensures that neither iBoot, the kernel or iOS is modified. In a recent leak, the source code for some parts of iBoot and SecureROM were leaked which makes it unofficially open source. The code was part of an iOS 9 build, which may sound disheartening to people who are hopping for a modern jailbreak to materialise from this, however, it's not bad news. Quite the opposite. The leak, although for an older version of iOS, is still very valuable and appreciated by the jailbreak community. While the code may not be the latest, the source code of the components may lead...

Apple inc. products news / Armed men tried to rob a Bitcoin exchange
« on: February 07, 2018, 11:01:20 AM »
Armed men tried to rob a Bitcoin exchangeThis past week an online cryptocurrency exchange had its office invaded by three armed men, who were attempting to rob the Bitcoin exchange by coercing the employees to process a transaction. The Canadian police force says the three criminals bound four employees and hit one in the head with a handgun. There was a fifth employee, however, who was fortunately able to contact the police. The Ottawa Police announced on their Twitter page after finding one of the suspects, 19 year old Jimmy St-Hilaire — who had fled into a ravine. They tracked the suspect down using dogs and had firearms drawn and prepared. Here's the tweet:Suspect charged in financial robbery and additional suspects are being sought https://t.co/vFb5ZJ3z2Q #ottnews pic.twitter.com/Srofnl8IEN— Ottawa Police (@OttawaPolice) January 24, 2018The other two suspects have not yet been found, but the police say they are still searching the area. The police also declined...

Ambiance, the default Ubuntu theme, is quite old. While Canonical had something new in the works for the now-cancelled Unity 8, the big shift to GNOME put a wrench in those plans. Now, similarly to the Suru icon theme, Ubuntu's new look may be based on work done for the cancelled Unity 8 and Ubuntu Phone projects, but this time led by the community, and based on the default GNOME theme, Adwaita.Compared to the old Ambiance theme, the new one ditches the gradients, and ups contrast levels – the good old brown is replaced almost entirely by very dark greys, giving the Linux distribution a brand new look.Still, despite its appearance, the "Communitheme" (what a name), as mentioned earlier, is based on the default GNOME Adwaita theme, since Canonical wants to stick as close as possible to the GNOME base, while maintaining Ubuntu's unique identity. This theme is still early in development, and as mentioned in the FAQ, will be released "when it's done", meaning that the next ...

One trick computer processors use for improving performance is speculative execution.Basically, the processor tries to "look ahead" into the code of the currently running program, and execute things that might not even end up getting executed – for example, if between the line of code in the prediction and the line currently being executed, an error (such as attempting to read memory you're not allowed to access) happens. In such a scenario, the changes by the processor are supposed to be "rolled back", and the code is supposed to continue running as if this prediction never happened. However, as discovered by researchers, observable side effects from code that was not supposed to be executed remain, which is what vulnerabilities like Meltdown and Spectre rely on.The most common scenario where speculative execution comes into play is branching – moments where code can diverge into multiple scenarios, with things like if statements. With that taken into account, @xor...

PS4 users should be wary of rest mode due to a new exploit that takes advantage of the PS4 during this stateA hacker by the name of Volodymyr Pikhur has presented an exploit which he has been sitting on for almost 2 years now. The exploit was presented at the Recon Brussels hacking conference a couple of days ago. Just a couple days ago Pikhur released the slides and a demo video of the exploit in action. According to the slides posted Pikhur has had the exploit working for 2 years but decided to finally disclose it since Sony doesn't have a bug bounty. You can check out the video below to see the exploit in action, Pikhur seems to be running an FTP server alongside other things to gain access to the PS4 in rest mode.It appears that Pikhur is using a kernel exploit which is not publicly known. He also is leveraging a vulnerability in sys_kldload. Looking at the presentation and the video, there is definitely enough information provided for people with bad intentions to take th...

With the Pixel 2, Google introduced the Pixel Visual Core - now it's letting third-party apps like Snapchat and Instagram take advantage of it.  The Pixel 2's Visual Core is what does most of the work when using the camera app. It helps in processing the image captured so that the phone uses less power and saves battery. Visual Core also incorporates Zero Shutter Lag to enable the point and click workflow of the Pixel 2 camera. You can learn more about the Pixel Visual Core here.  "Today we're turning on Pixel Visual Core for Pixel 2 users—a custom designed co-processor for Pixel 2. Using computational photography and machine learning (which powers Pixel's HDR+ technology), Pixel Visual Core improves image quality in apps that take photos.", Google's  Ofer Shacham explains, "This means it'll be easier to shoot and share amazing photos on Instagram, WhatsApp, and Snapchat, along with many other apps which use the Pixel 2 camera. All you need to do is take the photo and Pixel 2 w...

Google promised to start blocking website redirects with Chrome 64's release last month, they missed their deadline.  The firm planned to release a feature that would stop website redirections done m malicious ads. For the uninformed, this involved an ad forcing a redirect from its parent page into some other, unintended page advertising some kind of scam or alerting users to the existence of some fictional malware on their device for which they had the cure.  Google had intended to contain and fix the issue with Chrome 64, but the update rolled out last week and the feature was nowhere to be found.  Due to Google's Chromium bug tracker, we now know why.  Google was about to roll out its new website redirect blocker last week, but due to some last minute issues, it was held back and disabled. This was due to the info bar which informed users that Chrome had blocked a redirect to another site not being implemented yet.  It would have been moved to Chrome 65, but has been delayed once ...

Last week Facebook instituted a ban on ads for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, some advertisers are already side-stepping it.  This weekend, it was discovered that some advertisers were deliberately misspelling BITCOIN as BlTC0lN to evade the ban.  The i and 0 being swapped for a similarly looking lower-case L and 0 in the cited case.  Facebook is said to have begun investigating the issue once it was brought to their attention.  "This policy is intentionally broad while we work to better detect deceptive and misleading advertising practices, and enforcement will begin to ramp up across our platforms including Facebook, Audience Network and Instagram. We will revisit this policy and how we enforce it as our signals improve." Facebook wrote, when it first introduced the policy, further noting that "We understand that we may not catch every ad that should be removed under this new policy, and encourage our community to report content that violates our Advertising Policies. People c...
