Chrome OS may have official way to run Linux containers and terminal soon.  Chromebooks are typically built with the intent of performing relatively light work to decrease the amount of hardware required on board (thus reducing overall cost) while pushing the bulk of the power to cloud services, like Google's various browser applications. This allows a new category of users to get online without the need to invest a large amount of money, or for students at school who need a light laptop to swing around campus. As Chromebooks grow in popularity, so does their capabilities and platform.  We have seen some hacky ways of running a full Linux environment on Chromebooks in the past, however, there has not been any official support from Google. Several hints have trickled their way out starting late last year that suggest Linux Virtual Machine support will be added to Chrome OS. It's been reported by Chrome Unboxed that a "Terminal for Chromebooks" is available to some users in the most re...

Google's ARM-powered Chromebooks are about to be powered by Qualcomm chips, as soon as they move up in the market.  This week at the Mobile World Congress, Qualcomm's Monte Giles expressed an interest in building chips for Chromebooks, provided the operating system moves into the premium market.  Chromebooks are typically sold at low price points, but devices like the Pixel Book, Samsung Chromebook Pro, and similar are being sold at higher price points of $500+. More and kmore Chromebooks are being sold at higher prices with better build quality. Acer's Chromebook 15 for instance, has been retooled with touch and a metal chassis for new users in recent times, and rumours of detachable Chromebooks just won't go away.  Qualcomm is keeping an eye on that market, watching for when Chromebooks move primarily to the $500 and above market. Qualcomm sees more value in the premium market than it does in low-end, which is why it is testing its Snapdragon 845 with Chrome OS rather than the newl...

After weeks of waiting, the Electra iOS 11 jailbreak has finally been released to the public. The Electra jailbreak for iOS 11.0 up to 11.1.2, developed by CoolStar and some other developers, is finally released with full Cydia support and Substitute, a Cydia Substrate alternative, which allows the OS to load custom Dynamic Libraries and inject the code into processes, which means "tweaks work" in English.Electra has been in public beta testing for a while now but it didn't feature Cydia and people had to manually SSH into the device and copy over .dylib files into corresponding folders, meaning that paid tweaks were not supported and the whole process was troublesome and hard for regular users to pull off. This is not necessarily a bad thing as thanks to this, a big chunk of the jailbreak community has been educated about the basics of how the structure of the filesystem works.Thankfully, this is a thing of the past. Cydia is now part of the Electra jailbreak and can be install...

Qualcomm has decided to fill in the gaps in its Snapdragon lineup with its 700-series platforms. If you're using a flagship Android phone, you likely have an 800-series Snapdragon processor. If you're using a mid-range phone, chances are your Snapdragon chip starts with a 6. If you're rocking an entry-level phone, it's probably a 200- or 400-series Snapdragon.Today, Qualcomm is going odd, announcing a Snapdragon 700 series, cribbing a number of features from its high-end Snapdragon 800s without the eye-watering prices. The announcement doesn't specify any particular platform names — the series encompasses multiple chips being sourced to manufacturers later this year, for debut late 2018 or early 2019 — but the company says that the chips will have twice the AI performance as the top-tier 600-series chip, the Snapdragon 660, while retaining most of the Spectra ISP, Hexagon DSP, Kryo CPUs, Adreno GPUs and ultra-fast LTE connectivity of the 800 series.Qualcomm says all...

Elon Musk is stepping down from OpenAI.Elon Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 and is now stepping down from his role in the organization. OpenAI made an official blog post this past week with updates on changes within the organization, including Elon Musk's departure. It's also noted that he will continue to advise the organization, as well as providing future donations.OpenAI also mentions that Elon will dodge AI related conflicts by stepping down:  As Tesla continues to become more focused on AI, this will eliminate a potential future conflict for Elon. The organization was originally assembled to "benefit humanity as a whole" and raised over $1 billion in its founding year, 2015. OpenAI has driven a number of notable research projects in the past two years, starting with OpenAI Gym in early 2016. The 2017 Dota 2 demonstration was a tangible example of powerful machine learning, with a "machine-learned bot" playing against itself for two weeks real time, and then using what i...

Apple inc. products news / How to pwn your Super NES Classic
« on: February 26, 2018, 09:45:12 PM »
It's simple to make the SNES Classic your own.The Super NES Classic is a beautiful piece of nostalgia for a very good price. At only $79.99 for twenty classic Nintendo games and two extremely well-constructed controllers, the Super NES Classic is worth owning even if it couldn't be pwned. But happily, for us, it can be pwned to allow not only more Super Nintendo games to be installed, but to allow other emulators so we can play just about any game on it.We will take you through the simple process of getting your console unlocked and ready to go. Step one is to have your SNES Classic and it's USB cable next to your PC ready to go and to install the Hakchi2 Software from ClusterM. Some people prefer to use the .ZIP file but we will use the .EXE version for this tutorial. Unfortunately, there is currently no Mac version of this so you will need to find a Windows PC to do it or use Bootcamp. Toold like Wineskin or a vitual PC emulation software like VirtualBox could theoretically wor...

A glimpse into the (near) future of smartphones. It's no secret that smartphone screen bezels are getting smaller. With curved displays and miniaturization of common smartphone components, the idea of a "bezel-free" phone is getting closer than ever.Vivo has a new concept phone, dubbed Apex, that shows off the company's vision for a smartphone with tiny screen bezels — and all of the crazy technology involved with achieving the goal. It's wild to see in person and amazing when you think about everything at play here. The Apex uses a 6-inch 18:9 flexible OLED display, and that's key for multiple reasons. Vivo doesn't use the flexibility of the panel to curve the usable surface, but rather to bend the components and connectors along the edges to reduce the bezels. On the top and sides, the bezels are tiny at 1.8 mm. The bottom bezel is currently set at 4.3 mm, but Vivo is confident it can get that one down to the same 1.8 mm in time — but even still, the Apex has a...

Nokia goes all-in on Android One and looks toward the high-end market.Last year's MWC marked a re-launch of the Nokia brand under new parent company HMD Global, so it was only fitting that the company would take to MWC 2018 to launch a few more phones. We're getting three brand new Android devices, as well as an awesome throwback feature phone to capture even more of the nostalgia surrounding the Nokia brand. The most eye-catching launch of the group is the Nokia 8 Sirocco, which is a super-high-end variant of the Nokia 8 from last year. At €749 it's a full €150 more than the original Nokia 8, and thus the most expensive phone to bare the brand name since HMD Global took over. The Sirocco version basically seems like an excuse for Nokia to flex its design muscle and try something new, while also testing the waters for a true flagship-level priced phone with the Nokia brand.  Nokia went all-out on the Sirocco, testing the waters for this brand in the flagship Android ...

Updating to a beta build on the Essential phone is a hassle, thankfully Essential has made it easier by allowing users to update via OTAOwners of an Essential phone now have the option to opt-in to receive beta updates OTA from Essential. This is way better than having to sideload the build onto your phone in order to try out the beta builds. This helps especially now that the beta builds are Android Oreo updates, so you get to check out the new Oreo features, all using an easier update method. The process to sign up to receive the beta OTA updates is fairly simple. All you have to do is go to Essential's site and choose to receive your update through the Over-the-Air method. You will then have to fill in your information, the most important part of this being your serial number so they know which phone to send the update to.Sideloading is still an option for people who like that method better and don't like to receive every single beta update. Although both methods accomplish t...

Maybe lightsabers will finally become a real thingFor anyone that has seen Star Wars, you know that not much of what the franchise incorporates into the movies has any actual realism. One of the most iconic things to come from Star Wars is lightsabers, but even those aren't really possible because photons do not interact with each other, which is needed for a lightsaber.Research published recently in Science shows that it is possible for photons to in fact interact with each other. They were even able to get three photons to bind together. Although the new found technology isn't strong enough to defeat the dark side yet, it is a solid step towards creating photon-based quantum computers. The two lead researchers for the project are MIT physicist Vladen Vuletic and Harvard physicist Mikhail Lukin, who together head up the joint MIT-Harvard Center for Ultracold Atoms. They have spent the last few years trying to get photons to interact with each other, with their first major succe...

Apple inc. products news / Window Managers for Wayland
« on: February 23, 2018, 03:14:45 AM »
The big switch from X11 to Wayland is already underway, but you might not even notice, unless you're using a big desktop environment like GNOME.Indeed, while GNOME is already using Wayland by default, and other bigger desktop environment projects like KDE and Budgie are currently working hard on switching their compositors to Wayland, it seems like many simpler standalone window manager projects like Openbox and i3wm are not making plans to switch.Wayland is quite a different beast from X11, so moving to it would essentially equal having to do a complete rewrite for some of these more minimal window managers. Add to that the fact that Wayland's design requires window managers to provide certain features and services such as compositing (in fact, there really isn't a distinction between a "compositor" and a "window manager" with Wayland), lock screen support, or display management, and it starts to make sense why many of these smaller projects are not bothering to switch.However...

You cannot become a big social network without having at least one user interface controversy. Snapchat is no exception. The redesign, which rolled out earlier this year, left a lot of users angry and confused by the changes. As a social network, Snapchat, of course, boasted that the new user interface will boost engagement and make the app more "personal" by including things like personalization algorithms that aim to show content that the user might be interested in. And so, Snapchat joined Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter in being one of those networks that traded away the simple reverse chronological order timeline for one with engagement and algorithms. And with Snap Inc. not being interested in bringing the old UI back even in light of a petition signed by over a million people, everyone only has one question on their minds: how do you get the old Snapchat back? How to get the old Snapchat back on AndroidWhile the new interface was enabled server-side by Snap, and therefor...
