While Android Oreo is still rolling out to many users, Google is already preparing to launch the first preview of Android P mid-March, according to veteran leaker Evan Blass."Android P Developer Preview 1 is targeting a mid-month release," veteran leaker Evan Blass (EV Leaks) said on Twitter. No further details were provided as to what we would expect.A middle of March release would line up with Pi Day, the 14th of March (3.14), being a day that holds significance both to developers and perhaps to Google's next dessert-themed operating system. Android O and Android N (Oreo and Nougat) similarly both launched around the same time over the past two years, so this isn't exactly shocking. While there haven't been many concrete reports on what we can expect from Android P, a report from Bloomberg last month shared some of alleged Google's plans.Google is also rumoured to be working on native notch support for Android smartphones. Smartphones like the Asus Zenfone 5 and LG's G7 fla...

PSVita owning Quake fans will rejoice.A new update for VitaQuake, a port of the famous FPS Quake for the PS Vita, has been released all thanks to its developer, Rinnegatamante. The new 2.9 update includes a bunch of new features and bug fixes.VitaQuake, as the name implies, is a port of the first-person shooter game Quake, which originally came out in 1996, developed by id Software and published by GT Interactive. Quake is one of the first FPS to feature an accelerated gameplay, following the success of the Doom series by the same developers. Unlike the Doom engine, the Quake engine was the first to feature real-time 3D space rendering, using a system to pre-render 3D elements to reduce the complexity of the environment so it could run easily on those ol' timey computers.VitaQuake features:3D hardware acceleration through the GPU, thanks to VitaGL -- an openGL wrapper for PSVITA created by VitaQuake's developer RinnegatamanteMod supportRuns at 60FPS with a native 960x544 re...

Just a few weeks after the initial preview, Kali Linux is now available in the Microsoft Store. The initial demonstration from January involved using the WSL Distribution Switcher, which allows replacing the default Ubuntu image with a different Linux distribution, including those not yet officially supported, including Fedora, Alpine, and Clear Linux. Now, however, you can install Kali Linux from the Microsoft Store the same way you would any other officially supported WSL distribution, such as Ubuntu and openSUSE.Maintained by Offensive Security, Kali Linux is a "swiss knife" for information security, offering a huge variety of tools for things like penetration testing and digital analysis. Although most commonly used via a live USB or a virtual machine (you really wouldn't want to use something like that as your primary OS), there is still a lot of value to be gained from using the tools that Kali Linux offers side by side with your usual working environment. While using Kali L...

LG provided a bootloader unlock for the V30 just a few weeks after launch, but for some reason have not been able to get one out for the V30+ after 2 monthsThere are many Android smartphone vendors that make quality hardware that consumers love. Companies such as OnePlus, HTC, Sony and Honor are examples of companies that create quality hardware but are also regarded as developer-friendly. They provide a bootloader unlock for their devices in a timely manner and will even work with developers to ensure that custom ROMs can be created with full compatibility and can come out in a timely manner.Even some of the companies that people wouldn't necessarily regard as being developer-friendly such as Samsung and LG can actually be friendly with developers at times. For example, the Exynos versions of Samsung devices are easy to unlock, and even in the case of LG, they provided a bootloader unlock for the V30 just a few weeks after launch. This is why it is weird to see that the virtuall...

Facial recognition systems now seem to work for felines too. While the world is still scared of billion dollar companies watching over us Big Brother style, some people are using surveillance technologies for fun little projects, and sometimes… cat related?Arkaitz Garro is a front-end engineer for the company WeTransfer located in the Netherlands. After years of watching a cat wandering around his house, he decided to investigate whether or not that cat was a stray. After he and his wife slowly became acquainted and later on friends with the cat, they both learned that his name is Bobis, and he is in fact the neighbor's cat.Garro then had the idea for a facial recognition device for the cat so he would know whenever Bobis was waiting at the window and wanted to come in, in which case Garro would be notified and could go and open the back door for him. The cat apparently had its own schedule and would come at specific times of the day, and that's when the device would come...

Google is working on adding an Android Go simulator to Android Studio. While Google earlier announced apps like Google Maps Go and Gmail go to be optimised for Android Go devices, the firm had not yet made Android Go Images available for app developers to test their apps in Android Studio.A Google developer advised developers that they "are in the process of providing an official Android Go image" For developers who needed to test an Android Go optimised app, they were advised to," create an image on an older API level (say, 19) and set the RAM size to 512 MB and low JVM heap size", which would simulate the limitations of Android Go, albeit not perfectly.Android Go is Google's initiative to handle low-end smartphones, starting with Android Oreo. The firm has often found devices running its software plagued with poor performance, poor quality hardware, and low internal storage space with ever-ballooning apps.Google has created a cut-down version of Android with cutting down ver...

Get ready to have an actual edge to edge screen without a notch, because Essential may just do that for their next phoneThe Vivo Apex has been wowing many with its futuristic design choices. The Vivo Apex was introduced at MWC 2018 as a concept phone that featured very thin bezels, an in-display fingerprint scanner, and a popup front-facing camera. The pop-up front-facing camera was the craziest feature introduced in the phone and allowed for the removal of the dreaded notch. You can read more about the Vivo Apex in this article by Andrew Martonik.A fan of the Essential phone tweeted at the founder and CEO of Essential, Andy Rubin, asking if he had seen the Vivo Apex concept. The tweet is shown below:@essential @Arubin You seen this? https://t.co/upYBvmYuPCKeep the notch please.— Rafael Villar (@RitterRav) March 2, 2018Yes Rafael, I saw it. AI's making child porn? It really is 2018. The rise of "deepfakes", or fake pornographic videos that use machine learning AI to superimpose the face of a popular celebrity onto a porn performer to create the illusion of said celebrity having sex on video, has lead to a plethora of concerns - not least the privacy and moral dilemmas around what appears to be non-consensual pornography of celebrities existing on the internet. However, the latest of these concerns has arisen around the datasets, or facesets, or images that go into creating these deepfakes – and concerns that they may be leading into the accidental creation of nonconsensual child porn. To understand the concern, let's look at exactly how "deepfakes" work – The machine learning algorithms that go into creating these "deepfakes" will analyze a faceset of thousands of images and videos gathered into a single folder and read them frame-by-frame to get the exact image that is best matched and suited to the origi...

Water cooling does make a differenceOne of my favourite experiments with low-end Hardware was using a modded Socket 771 Xeon from China in a Socket 775 motherboard (with ancient DDR2 RAM) to play games like Overwatch or Crysis. However, CPU intensive games like EA's Star Wars Battlefront 2 suffered from heavy stuttering that made it impossible to play effectively.Overclocking is the answer, but there was one issue. The Xeon X5460 has an alarming TDP of 120 W and a Tcase of 63°C, so the small air cooler I was using was already having difficulty keeping up with the CPU's requirements.Thankfully, the last few years have seen a dramatic increase in options for CPU water-cooling. All-in-One solutions have become particularly popular and after getting my hands on an imported unit from Chinese brand BJK that supports the 775 socket I could not resist the opportunity to test it and see how far could the X5460 could go.Once properly installed (and I will admit, I got it o...

Being the backbone of Microsoft Azure, Hyper-V is a great solution for virtualizing all sorts of operating systems. However, desktop integration (features such as clipboard sharing) have always been lacking for Linux guests. While this makes sense, since Microsoft primarily focuses on delivering a great Hyper-V experience for servers and the cloud, and instead positions the Windows Subsystem for Linux as the preferred way to get a Linux userland on your own machine, there are still many use cases out there for a comfortable virtualized desktop Linux experience with proper desktop integration – after all, not every single desktop Linux app is terminal-based.The good news is that improvements are coming! As previewed at Microsoft's Virtualization blog, starting with Ubuntu 18.04, it will be possible to easily get a Linux virtual machine in Hyper-V that supports what Microsoft calls "Enhanced Session Mode", which adds features such as:Better mouse experienceIntegrated clipbo...

Robin Hood or remorseful hacker? As cryptocurrency has grown in relevance and value over the course of the last 12 months, cryptocurrency fraud has simultaneously become much more prevalent. With users flocking to services like Coinbase, Kraken, and others, it's inevitable that the hackers and scammers of this world would find a way to dupe the odd customer out of a few thousand dollars. However, we seldom see attacks of the scale of one witnessed last year, where an alleged hacker hacked a cryptocurrency startup called Coindash and replaced the legitimate Ethereum address for their brand new Initial Coin Offering with their own, tricking unsuspecting victims into sending them their Ether instead of to Coindash. The scam promptly brought in roughly 43,000 ether worth around $7.4 million at the time and approximately $37 million today. However, it seems the legacy of that attack and the millions lost are still continuing and manifesting to this day, as the hacker appears to have bee...

No more fiddling around with your home movies and anime.PS Vita users will be more than familiar with the struggle of fiddling around with QCMA, the open source alternative to Sony's Content Manager Assistant that allows jailbroken PS Vita users to reap all the benefits of Sony's Content Manager but in open source, homebrew form. While it is a step up from Sony's offering, it still cannot beat dragging and dropping files directly to your Vita's mass storage, which is what Vita Media Center allows. As of right now, the utility offers the following features:The ability to play videos on your PSVita without QCMA, just You only have to copy the videos to ux0:/data/media center/videos/ and not worry about anything else.Touch controls for stopping/playing and exiting a video.Ability to skip 10 seconds in either direction by pressing the L/R buttons on the D-pad.As the utility uses the Vita's native video player APIs, it can currently only play back MPEG-4 Simple Profile Level 6 ...

All PS4 users running version 4.55 will be delighted to know that a full jailbreak for the version has been released, along with an exploit for 5.05Developer AlexZzZ recently released a proof of concept exploit for PS4's running version 5.01. This exploit was later independently confirmed to also work on 5.05 by mathieulh. This combined with Qwertyuiop's release of a kernel exploit for 4.55 recently has allowed for a full jailbreak for 4.55 to be created. This exploit relies on a recently discovered Webkit vulnerability, CVE-2017-7005. This is the same vulnerability which was used by Team Reswitched for the Nintendo Switch. It is possible that the exploit for the PS4 was ported over from the one already created for the Nintendo Switch. In order to have a fully functional jailbreak, there are two exploits needed. One is a usermode exploit which gives limited code execution control, and the other is a kernel exploit which gives privilege escalation allowing for full access to the s...
