Apple IPhone software / Unlock iPhone 2G/3G with Firmware 3.1 on Windows

I have upgraded iPhone 2G to OS 3.1.2 using iTunes. Earlier it was able to start. But now it says that you need to unlock. Will the above procedure help me to install customised version as mentioned in the help ?
